Staying healthy as you age is important. And it’s something everyone can do with a little help. The Area Agency on Aging 1-B (AAA 1-B) is committed to helping keep the older adults who live in southeast Michigan and Metro Detroit healthy. We support several senior health and wellness initiatives in the six counties we serve (Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair and Washtenaw). Whether you are looking for new ideas to help you stick to a diabetes management plan, a fall prevention class to keep you on your feet and active, a program to help you live with cancer, or new ideas on managing a chronic illness, developing a healthy eating plan or getting some exercise, we have a class and a program for you!
All of the programs we offer are evidence-based. This means that they have been tested and proven to work in a real-world setting. Most of our classes are built on models that have been developed in university settings.
Our health and wellness programs are available to older adults and their family members or caregivers. Some classes are offered directly by the AAA 1-B, while others are offered via our partner organizations. They are held at community venues throughout the counties we serve. You’ll find our classes in your neighborhood—at senior centers, senior apartment buildings or places of worship. Wherever you are, there is likely a class near you. Most workshops will meet once or twice a week for multiple weeks.
Some programs are free, while others may be offered at low cost. Classes are held in a small-group setting and led by leaders who have been thoroughly trained in the class model. Many are master trainers—meaning they have gone through intensive training and are certified to train other leaders to deliver the program.
