Low Income Medicare Recipients Can Get Help with Prescription Costs

Southfield, Michigan (February 7, 2014) – Cost is the number one reason why older adults don’t fill prescribed medications, putting them at risk for a health crisis.  An estimated 15,000 Medicare Beneficiaries in southeastern Michigan are eligible to receive the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), available through Medicare Part D to help cover their prescription drug costs, but the subsidy is typically underutilized.  The Area Agency on Aging 1-B (AAA 1-B) is hosting free Medicare Assistance Days (see dates and locations below) to help individuals determine their eligibility, answer questions and assist with enrollment.

“Medicare beneficiaries with limited incomes and resources have an excellent opportunity to receive subsidized prescription drug coverage through this benefit,” said Jennifer Therrien, Manager of the Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) for the AAA 1-B.  “Caregivers, neighbors, friends and family can play an important role in helping to reach these individuals who may not be aware of this important subsidy.”

If a beneficiary’s assets are no more than $26,860 for a couple or $13,440 for a single, not including primary residence and car, and their annual income is under $23,265* for a couple or $17,235* for a single, they may qualify for LIS.  (*2013 income guidelines effective through March 31, 2014.  2014 income guidelines have not been released to date.)

Counseling by Phone

To get assistance with LIS/Extra Help over the phone, beneficiaries can call the AAA 1-B’s MMAP program at 1-800-803-7174 from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
